Black Muscovy

The Black Muscovy Duck is a remarkable and distinctive breed of domestic duck with unique features and characteristics.

• Appearance: This breed is known for its distinctive and sleek appearance, with a slightly iridescent sheen that adds to its elegance. Their smooth and shiny feathers give them a polished and refined appearance. Please note that it is common and expected that Black Muscovy ducks will also have some white feathers.
• Size: Black Muscovy Ducks are considered one of the larger domestic duck breeds. Adult males, known as drakes, typically weigh 10-15 pounds. Adult females are slightly smaller, with a weight range of 6-8 pounds.
• Red Facial Caruncles: One of the most distinctive features of the Black Muscovy Duck is the prominent, fleshy caruncles around its eyes and bill, which are often red. These caruncles add a unique and appealing aspect to their appearance.
• Quiet and Docile: Black Muscovy Ducks are known for their quiet and docile nature. They are not as vocal as some duck breeds, making them an excellent choice for urban or suburban settings.
• Excellent Foragers: These ducks have a knack for foraging and are highly efficient at finding food. They will graze on plants, insects, and aquatic organisms, making them valuable for pest control in gardens and ponds.
• Broody and Excellent Mothers: Black Muscovy Ducks are known for their strong maternal instincts. They are excellent mothers and are often chosen for the natural incubation of eggs, as they are known to be dedicated and protective.  They are genetically different from all other breeds of domestic duck (which all originate from the wild Mallard duck). If you cross a Muscovy and any other domestic breed of duck, the progeny are infertile and cannot reproduce.
